Urgent Questions on Ghouta Situation

Date: 10.04.18 | in: Foreign Affairs

The ongoing humanitarian crisis in Eastern Ghouta, along with the recent reports of chemical weapons attacks, has shocked and appalled us all. Alex absolutely shares the concerns of many who have contacted him over the plight of civilians in Eastern Ghouta following the recent escalation of violence by Syrian government forces.

Alex was unfortunately unable to make the questioning of the Secretary of State for International Development last month. However, he was able to table two written questions regarding the situation:

  • To ask the Secretary of State for International Development, what assessment she has made of the Syrian Government’s attacks on Eastern Ghouta.
  • To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what communications her Department has had with the UNOCHA regarding attempts to establish medical evacuations and increased humanitarian assistance.

In response, Alex received one written answer so far which you can read here.

Increased pressure should be put on Assad and Russia to ensure UN aid convoys have access to treat those affected, and that a cease fire should be negotiated as soon as possible.

As a party, Labour are committed to a diplomatic solution in Syria, as well as ensuring perpetrators of war crimes are investigated, prosecuted and convicted.
