Alex Sobel has been names MP Climate Champion at the Climate Coalition’s Green Heart Hero awards last night.
The awards, hosted by Kay Burley of Sky news, presented Alex the award in the ‘local champion’ category.
Alex said “I am absolutely delighted to be named MP Climate Champion and to receive this award. It is so important to utilise recognition like this to get our Net Zero target date brought forward and to build a platform for the upcoming UN climate change conference which is due to be held in the UK later this year.
The local champion aspect is important to me as it represents the great work being done in our area by so many individuals and organisations like Zero Carbon Headingley and Otley 2030. In Leeds North West, we are building the case together for cleaner air, plastic free rivers and oceans and a zero-carbon future.”
Presenting the award to Alex was Christine Allen Dench, director of the Catholic international development charity (CAFOD). She said on twitter “Presenting a Green Heart Hero award tonight to Alex Sobel for being a local champion. Great to see so many walking the talk.”
Alex has been a champion for the environment locally, pushing for greater flood prevention resources, protecting green spaces, and securing £29 million in clean air funding. He has also produced a transport strategy for Leeds North West.
Nationally he sits on the Environmental Audit Committee and has set up an All-Party Parliamentary Group on Net Zero. He has called for a Marshall plan for the environment and has made the protection of the planet his top Parliamentary priority.
The Climate Coalition describes its annual Green Heart Hero awards as “The Green Heart Hero Awards are our chance to shine a spotlight on these extraordinary endeavours as we give our neighbours a huge round of applause for all they are doing to create a cleaner, more secure future for our communities and beyond.”
