Parliamentary questions

Ministry of Defence | RAF Syria Airstrikes

Date of question: 19.04.2018 | in: Foreign Affairs

During the Parliamentary debate following UK airstrikes on Syria, I intervened to ask whether it was time the UK developed something similar to the USA’s War Powers Act.

I said: “in the United States, the War Powers Resolution, requires the President to notify Congress of his intent and to justify within 48 hours the sending of military forces equipped for combat into foreign nations. Is that not exactly the situation that we were faced with last week?”

Before the debate, I asked the Ministry of Defence how many missions the RAF had flown in Syria between March 2017 and March 2018. The answer given below only strengthens my view that much more can be done to improve the accountability of the Government to Parliament when it comes to the use of military force abroad.

Alex Sobel MP
"To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, how many military airstrikes were carried out by the RAF in Syria in each month between March 2017 and March 2018. "
"The UK has carried out a total of 249 airstrikes in Syria between March 2017.
