Leeds Bradford Airport expansion plans

Date: 07.09.21 | in: Transport

I have been campaigning for a long time against any increase in flights and therefore pollution at Leeds Bradford Airport. Whilst I have no issue with the terminal itself, the application was clearly predicated on an increase of passenger numbers to 7 million.

I watched the panel’s deliberations and was disappointed by the outcome. I was proud of our local councillors who sit on that panel namely councillor Garthwaite and Walshaw, who spoke loudly and clearly against this decision. What I do think, however, is that a decision of this national importance should never have been placed in the hands of a 14 member local plans panel, with no national guidance and no systems in place to make such a decision.

In light of this, I requested that the decision be called in by Robert Jenrick. You can read about that here. This has now happened and we await the outcome.

It is also important to remember that Leeds does not sit in a vacuum and that there are expansions going ahead across the country. We desperately need a National Aviation Plan, alongside other measures to ensure that we reduce unnecessary air travel and tackle head on the impact of air travel on our planet. This is something I will continue to fight for in Parliament.
